504 Plan Counseling

What is a 504 Plan?

A 504 plan is a formalized document created for students with disabilities who require accommodations or modifications to access the same educational opportunities as their peers. The term "504" refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a federal law in the United States that prohibits discrimination based on disability.

Key points about a 504 plan include:

Eligibility: To qualify for a 504 plan, a student must have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning, walking, hearing, or seeing. This impairment must require special accommodations or modifications in the educational setting.

Evaluation and Planning: The process typically begins with an evaluation by a school's 504 team, which may include teachers, administrators, counselors, and other relevant personnel. If the evaluation determines that the student meets the criteria for a 504 plan, the team works with the student and their parents or guardians to develop a plan tailored to the student's specific needs.

Accommodations and Modifications: A 504 plan outlines the accommodations and modifications necessary to support the student's academic and functional needs. These may include adjustments to the learning environment, such as preferential seating, extended time on tests, assistive technology, modified assignments, or additional support services.

Implementation and Review: Once the 504 plan is in place, the school is responsible for implementing the accommodations and modifications outlined in the plan. The plan should be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and to make any necessary adjustments based on the student's progress or changing needs.

Legal Protections: Under Section 504, students with disabilities are entitled to equal access to educational programs and activities, regardless of their disability. Schools that receive federal funding are required to comply with Section 504 and provide reasonable accommodations to eligible students.

Overall, a 504 plan serves as a tool to ensure that students with disabilities receive the support they need to participate fully and effectively in the educational process. It is designed to promote equal opportunity, access, and success for students with disabilities in school.
